All Over

Well this weekend came to signify how everything is all over (or soon will be).  To back up a few weeks, the end of Becky's time in school came to a close when she graduated on Dec. 11th.  She can now add the initials of BSN after her name (Bachelor of Science in Nursing).  She is elated to finally be done with school and to be one of the few people in her family with a Bachelor's degree.  So an end has come for her in part of her education (unless she decides to pursue a higher degree).

Next came the announcement of my end of playing hockey for the Komets.  After 2 years and multiple seasons I am taking a step away from my first true hockey team to help players at a lower level and to improve some minor aspects of my game as I prepare myself to play in a higher league. Don't fret my fellow Saturday night warriors I will still be playing for the Grave Diggers and the Silverwings.  My last Komets game will be Jan. 3rd.

Finally came the end of the frantic holiday shopping season this year.  Becky and I are happy to finally be over with Christmas as this year proved hard in finding gifts for everyone.  I also learned this year no matter what I ask for Becky will go to any length to get it, even if it is vague.  When Becky asked me what I wanted for Christmas I replied "Mike Ribeiro" (one of the top players on the Dallas Stars hockey team).  To my amazement she was able to get a framed autograph picture of Mike Ribeiro with a patch from one of his hockey uniforms.  I have now proclaimed that one of my Fanch art pieces will be replaced with this collectors item.

This weekend came the end of the Cowboys season.  This will leave my Dad disappointed as the team seamed to dissolve one stupid play after another this past weekend.  Maybe it is a good thing as now my Dad can find better things to do with his Sundays instead of watching the Cowboys waste perfectly good opportunities.

The next and final end to come is this year.  With all of the major ups and downs it is good to finally start a new year.  I just hope that next year will build upon all of the good things from this year and change the bad things to make them better.  If I don't see you soon then "Happy New Year".  Becky and I will be celebrating at the Stars game (our annual tradition).

Back on the Tricycle

Well after 3 1/2 weeks of rehab I have received clearance to play hockey this weekend.  I do have a lengthy list of things I must do in order to play.  Everything from warm-up exercises to wraps and balms that must be used.  It should make for an interesting game.  I will only be playing one game as I do not want to push it too hard.

This weekend will be the one year anniversary of Johnathon's passing.  Becky and I will be going to the cemetery at 5pm on Saturday to pay our respects and to watch the sunset.  When Johnathon passed both of us commented how beautiful the sunset was in his room that night.  we feel that taking the time one day out of the year to watch the sunset is a great way to pay respect.  A question I have for you is how often do you ever watch the sunset?  If you want to participate with us you don't necessarily need to be there.  Just take 10 minutes and watch the colors that explode across the sky.  The golds, oranges, and yellows are some of the richest colors you will ever see in your life.  The peacefulness that you will get from viewing this will make you reflect on so many things in your life.

After this we will be at the Dr. Pepper Starcenter in Euless for the 7pm hockey game (Ice Bats vs. Komets).  We would love for everyone to attend the game and to share some good laughs on my part (my hockey team can be real comedians sometimes depending how we are playing). After the game we plan to spend some time with our friends and family members.  I hope to see you there.

Next week will be a very special week for Becky as she will be graduating from UTA with a Bachelors in Nursing.  I know that over the last couple years I have been so proud of her in taking charge of her education and working so hard to get her degree.  No amount of words will ever symbolize how proud I am of her and how I cannot wait to see her walk across that stage and receive her degree.  Her official graduation date will be December 11th.  If you have not already sent her an email, post your congratulations on this website.

On a final note I would like to thank my workout partners for being so tolerant of my physical limitations that last few weeks.  You all have been so great and supportive of me.  I hope that I have kept the workouts strong and you have not felt cheated by my limited abilities.  In the upcoming days as I become able to handle more activities I hope to be able to step and do with the group.

See you at the hockey game.

How did we get here . . .

Well how adventurous the last weeks have been. We had a very wonderful birthday party for Johnathon on Sunday (11/9). On his actual birthday (11/11) Becky was able to have a small blood drive in his honor, we had dinner with one our closest friends, and I shadowed a Physician Assistant at my Doctors office. To end the day we came to find our "messaging tree" (the one we used to broadcast a boy or girl when we first found out) covered in blue ribbons with blue cards wishing us messages of hope and joy from our neighborhood friends. It really capped off what was a long day. If you were unable to make it above are pictures from the cemetery on Sunday and of the messaging tree.

"And now the rest of the story . . ." On 11/8 I enjoyed my first games back in hockey. I had 8 shots on goal and delivered a quick shot with hard skating. This left many of my teammates stating that I looked like I had not missed a beat. On the night of 11/9 I basically ended my hockey season. During our softball game I left my comfortable coaching position to partake in the play when a fellow teammate went down. In my one and only at bat I beat out an infield hit. After moving to third while jogging home I felt a twinge and something slide across the back of my leg. Instantly I knew this was not good and I began to keep moving and stretching as I could feel my leg seize up and I was not going to let this happen. The game ended shortly after this when Becky scored the final blowout run (please note Becky needs practice on sliding or else she is going to keep ending up severely bruised). Upon reaching home the leg locked up and I began icing it. After a couple of days Becky and I thought I was out of the woods as the swelling was minimal but no bruising had occurred. On 11/12 the bruising showed in a big way, covering half of the back of my leg.

After visiting the Doctor he diagnosed it as a grade 2 hamstring sprain (partially torn with active bleeding). So here I am back in physical therapy with little hope of returning back to hockey soon. Today I made the decision that I would return back to the ice for one more go at it on 12/6. Whether I make it for one game or one shift, my son taught me one key thing about life. No matter what you do keep trying. Being that this was the day he passed away I know he would want me to push hard. I am requesting any prayers of healing you can offer to send my way. I greatly appreciate this as my return to the ice not only signifies strength and perseverance but also my understanding that life must go one. Johnathon offered us a great chance to live the life of being child rearing parents. Though it was only a small taste, it was one that filled me with a lifetime of memories.

Thanksgiving will soon be upon us. Just like the title of the holiday Becky and I have much to be thankful for. We will be hosting a thanksgiving dinner get together with some of our closest friends and family members at our house this year. I hope to post a list of all of the things I am thankful for in the upcoming week. Till then stay safe, stay strong, and enjoy the life that we have (we only live once).

An Open Letter to Johnathon

Happy Birthday Johnathon,

Your party Sunday was so wonderful. All of your friends brought you presents of soft cuddly animals. Your Mom brought balloons and birthday cupcakes. Pastor Eddie gave a wonderful sermon regarding eternity and all of those who we may see there someday. Even those who could not attend the party sent cards, letters, emails, and gifts in your honor. The most beautiful thing we did was release the balloons so that they could float up to you. Though we miss you dearly I am not sad today. For today one year ago at 8:01 am you came into our lives. Everything was perfect at this moment. Though you never made a sound your voice was heard quite loud.

Johnathon, of all the gifts delivered the greatest gift of all has already been received. You coming into my life was the greatest gift your Mommy could have given to me. Though we both miss you dearly, be happy son. Today is a great day as you taught us to be parents of the greatest gift God can give us. There should be no tears of sadness only tears of joy. Happy birthday my precious angel and don't eat too much icing and get a tummy ache.

Forever Love,
Dad

P.S.
Mommy and I are so thankful for everyone during this time and I wish I was able to list all of their names but this list would be almost never ending. You truly captured many hearts.

Guess Who's Birthday is coming up????

November 11th is Johnathon's 1st birthday. We decided that we would throw a couple of parties in his honor. The first party would be this Sunday November 9th. We will be meeting at 11:00am to attend church at Calvary Baptist Church (in Euless) and then we will have lunch at Main St. Bar-B-Que at 12:15pm. After lunch (around 1:30) for those who want to attend we will hold a birthday decorating party at the cemetery for Johnathon. Feel free to come and go to any of the 3 events on Sunday.

On Tuesday November 11th Becky and several friends will be donating blood at Carter Bloodcare in Johnathon's honor. If you are able to attend, we would love for you to come and give the precious gift of life. Please contact Becky or myself as we are setting up times for the blood donations now.

We hope that you will be able to attend and share in this special occasion as we celebrate Johnathon's birthday. Thanks and God Bless.

Best Month Ever . . .

It's official I am cleared to resume my hockey play. The strength is there in my shoulder that I can take hits and dish them out. My slap shot is still lacking, but I will use the next 2 weeks to get some power into it. My legs are stronger than ever as I have spent the last month doing heavy leg exercises. I had the luxury of trying out my running speed around the base paths in the softball game sunday. Which by the way was the first win for the Komodo Dragons. My coaching record is now starting to look better with a win in it. Becky is starting to show she has real skills as a catcher. If you don't believe me just ask her and she will show you the bruises. Michelle is now moving in with us on the weekends. Which only made sense since she is around every weekend as it is. Hockey is in full gear, but I am staying away because of my brothers wedding.

Becky is loving her new job . . . uh let me rephrase that looooovingg her new job! Though it can be stressful, it is a stress that she enjoys and that challenges her. Some of her former Children's co-workers have even come to work for her. My classes are going well, though studying genetics makes me just look at my family alot closer (boy do we have some odd ball genes). Looking forward to the class being over with and starting some Christmas vacation. Mel and Bobby are talking about a ski trip and looks like we might head out to Ruidoso once school is out. Becky's graduation is December 11th. So I think we will ski as a celebration after that.

Well I must be off. Before I go I do need a great big favor from everyone. This week has not been all cherry's. Unfortunately last week our friends Christine and Spencer had the fright of their lives when they found out that Christine's mom had fallen down the stairs with their 4 month old daughter. Madison received a big goose egg on her head and is doing well, but is still recovering from the accident. We also learned that Dustin's mom is sick with terminal cancer and that he and his family are dealing with the expected loss of his mother. Finally Mel has to have some medical testing done that the prognosis has multiple conclusions (some good and some bad). I ask that you keep each and every one of these people and their families in your prayers. With all of the joy that we have at the end of the year no more sadness should exist. I know with everything that occurred last year I am ready for something good to occur (whether that be a mirale or just some plain old positive news).

Please be on the lookout as I will be posting an update shortly regarding a birthday pary for Johnathon.

On The Mend

Well I am finally getting back to a normal routine.  I have been driving for a week now and I am starting to feel normal.  I still have some strength issues in my shoulder that I am dealing with, but this in not to be unexpected.  I still have physical therapy twice a week, but I am definitely closing in completing it.  I will probably return to playing hockey full time around the second week in November.  With my bothers wedding the first weekend in November I am trying to keep my schedule flexible since many of the arrangements are running late.  I think my mom is finally experiencing the joys of trying to put together last minute wedding plans.

When Becky and I were married almost 9 years ago, we made a decision after we saw how much wedding planning pulled families to breaking points that we wanted to make it easy.  Easy it was.  We simply called resorts in Vegas and had them send us information and videos on their wedding services.  From this we decided on the wedding chapel at the Excalibur Casino and Resort.  We selected our package and then called a travel agent to book our flights.  No worrying about flowers, photographs, videos, and etc.  It was fun easy and relaxful.  Looking at all my mom is having to do now, I think she appreciates that from which we saved her from.  Then again I know for all of the pain, its worth the rewards of being involved in something so special and important.  Sorry mom for not giving it to you all and we are here if you need a hand with anything.

If you see a blonde streak go flying by on her bicycle, its Becky.  After starting her new job she has found that the stresses are not the same and that she has some free time on her hands.  So she went and got a brand new bicycle and is riding with the neighbors to get exercise.  She started softball last weekend and before the first pitch she was traded.  That's right my first coaching decision was to trade my wife for a pitcher of beer . . . OK actually it was just a pitcher no beer (though we got the wrong end of the deal as the beer should have been sent for her performance).  The trade was good and bad.  Becky was going to be out catcher and she ended up catching for the other team so I enlisted our friend Leslie to catch for us.  Both Becky and Leslie played so well while having such a good time that they have created a quandary for me when it comes to next game.  The game went very well with the exception that we lost 10-9.  Though it was another coaching loss for me I was quite proud of our team as they never gave up and stayed in it until the end.  We played an experienced team and we performed like veterans.  I think this Sundays game may have an outcome in our favor.  I would like to thank all of our fans for showing up for support.  I know I loved hearing them root us on.

We had a treat Saturday as Supergirl gave us some great tickets to the Dallas Stars preseason hockey game.  We were able to live the high life with VIP parking and tickets.  We were able to enjoy free food, drinks, and hobnob with the financial supporters of the Stars.  Then to make life even better Becky, Michelle, Leslie, and I were shown on the jumbo tron at the arena.  Nothing is better than all of the text messages I received from friends seeing us on the "big screen".  Though I have not played in the NHL I can at least say for one minute I was part of its celebration.  Thanks again Mel for the tickets!

328

That's the magical number, 328. I had 328 emails awaiting my return to work after being off a week after surgery. I wish they were all well wishes for my health, but that only counted for 6 of the emails. Glad to know that I am needed so much when I am gone.

My parents are back from Hawaii and have delivered us our much anticipated pineapple. If you have not had fresh pineapple from Hawaii, I highly recommend it. If you like it so much, you can grow your own by simply chopping about 1/2 inch below the top of the pineapple and putting it in some water. After about a week transplant it to soil and wait 2 years. Hey nobody said the good stuff comes fast in life.

Next up to return is my brother and his fiancee. Ok I have received many inquiries regarding what's up with my brother. Well this is the story. Last year he began corresponding with Lin (sorry if I am misspelling her name) via the Internet. After several conversations he decided to visit her in China. After his trip and several more months of corresponding he flew to China and proposed to her. Now all of the paper work is complete and she is now on her way to see our country and become a part of our fun family. So their you have it. The story of my brother (I saved some of the colorful stuff for another day).

I have a new adventure that Becky is partaking in . . . softball. That's right Becky has been drafted to play softball on Michelle's team The Kimodo Dragons. Unfortunately I have not been cleared to play so I will be fielding the teams Coaching position. We had our first practice on Saturday. All indications are we will have a very fun team, if not I have a lot of jokes and pranks to start playing on people (be scared Michelle be very scared).

On the hockey front I had my coaching debut lead to a loss. I coached The Grave Diggers against The Komets. Yeah I know I am such a traitor for going against my main home team. Let me give you some details. The Komets have a very strong and experienced coach. The Grave Diggers coach had a scheduling conflict, so I stepped in. We played shorthanded and lost 5-0. For now I will stick to trying to play hockey instead of coaching it. For any of my co-workers who maybe reading this, it is safe to say I will not be leaving to coach in the NHL anytime soon.

I hope everyone is doing good. My rehab is going good and I look to be on schedule for returning back to everything as expected for my time table.

Before and After

Just in case you need a chuckle here is the before.

Here is the happy drug after!

I guess it's clear to see where the "Pink Elephants" came from. No Stephen thats a straw not the Elephants trunk.

Post-op

Stephen is now at home, resting and no longer seeing those pink elephants. He again was fun to talk with during the recovery stage. No he did not propose to me this time around, but he kept telling me how much he loved me. He had no problems during the surgery and the doctor said everything went well. I will keep you all updated especially if those pink elephants come back again.

Thanks for The Memories

Tonight was my last hockey games before my surgery. Though it was a fun night filled with many memories only the Grave Diggers won (3-1) as the Komets suffered their second defeat in regulation (2-1). Both games were skating challenges for me. It was not brute strength, size, or stick handling that made my night, it was my ability to carry the puck and skate hard man to man that made the night. I had an assist in the Komets game ending my night on a personal note in a good way.

Though my season is over, my comrades will continue to play on and to fight in the playoffs. To this I would like to wish you good luck and to tell you thanks. Thanks for the tough plays, close games, and support. For the Grave Diggers thanks to Bob S., Bob B., Dan, Ron, Steve C., Steve S., Randy, Raul, Tom, and Jon. You guys have continued to improve in so many ways and I know that this season will help catapult you into your best season yet next session. For the Komets thanks to Will, Ryan, Mike B., Mike G., AJ, Scott D., Scott B., Sean, Albert, Kevin, Dustin, Chuck, Brent, and Coach Al. I wish you guys the best and I know that next week will dictate your post season, good luck and go for The Keg!

An extra special thanks to Supergirl (Mel), Bobby, and Michelle. Thank you guys for sticking around to watch me play. Thanks Michelle for always being there and offering your support. Thanks to Bobby for the comic relief, you always make the game more fun. Thanks to Supergirl for being my strength when my shoulder could not handle it. You made playing on your line one of the highlights of my night and my season.

Now for my surgery, to answer the major question am I nervous . . . YES!! Ok last year I knew what was the problem, what was going to occur, and how long I would be out for. This time I still have many questions. We know the labrum has tearing but how much and how bad is everything else will not be known until after the surgery. How long will I be out of work . . . right now best case scenario just one week. I will probably be unable to drive for 2-3 weeks, so it looks like I will have to work from home for awhile. Am I ready for this . . . YES!!! Let's get it over. It is not getting any better and I am starting to get real frustrated with my limitations.

Becky will be off for my surgery. She started her new job and is enjoying the opportunity that it is offering in shaping a unit that has such great potential. I am so excited for her. It's good to hear her come home with new challenges and tales. Being such a small facility they try every way possible to make you feel like part of the family. Something that the large size of Children's was not always possible to achieve. If you go by to see her, call first. Her new Hospital has such strict security that she needs to know your coming to let you in. Makes me feel good just in case she ever picks up a night shift.

I know many of you will be keeping me in your prayers this week, but I ask that you also keep my Grandmother (who is recovering from surgery), my Parents (they will be leaving on their regular Hawaii trip), and my Brother (who is traveling to China to pickup his Fiance, I will explain this in my blogs to come). Finally I have been made aware of the party that is being thrown in my honor after my surgery (or should I say dishonor). I guess I will just say bring your cameras and take your pictures. Just remember I will get you back some day. As for you Becky, just keep the pain medicine coming and I will think about forgiveness.

Lots of To Do's

Well a lot has happened, let me give you the rundown of everything that has happened up until now. "Well, let's see. First the earth cooled. And then the dinosaurs came, but they got too big and fat, so they all died and they turned into oil. And then the Arabs came and they bought Mercedes Benzes. And Prince Charles started wearing all of Lady Di's clothes. I couldn't believe it" (ok I watched Airplane a few times too many).

Well congrats is in order to Becky on her new job. Sadly she will be leaving Children's Medical Center to take a new position at Cook's Childrens Northeast Hospital as Inpatient Manager and Employee Health Coordinator. She is excited about the new position as this is a new hospital branch from Cook's that has been expanding. Though small at this time the Hospital will offer her the chance to experience a more managerial role in health care.

The bad news is I am going under the knife again. Seems like I did not learn the first time I had shoulder surgery. Don't blame it on hockey, this injury is purely from weightlifting. I have torn the labrum on my right shoulder and will need to have it repaired. Surgery is set for September 10th. So come one and come all on the 10th to get your laughs at my expense. Just remember according to Becky I make a great drugged up drooler.

In other news, Pastor Eddie at our church just had shoulder replacement surgery and is at home recovering. I can tell he is getting tired of being at home as his self reflections on his blog have made me laugh on several occasions. Please keep him in your prayers and if you get a chance check out his blog at http://eddieadamsblog.com/.

We are all booked for our cruise. The ship leaves May 26, 2009. We depart from Copenhagen then heads to Stockholm, Helsinki, St Petersburg, Tallinn, Gdansk, Oslo, and then returns back to Copenhagen. Just for an extra stop Becky and I will be having a one night layover in Amsterdam. There is still room and many good specials if you are interested in going let me know and I will get you the hook-up deal.

My new job is moving right along and The Komets have 4 wins and one loss in overtime. We currently are in sole possession of 3rd place. With my surgery scheduled right before my last regulation game, it looks like I will have to watch any postseason activity from the bench.

Becky is playing neighborhood triage nurse. This week she has had to take care of a neighbor who cut the tip of his thumb off and then she treated another neighbor who inhaled pool chemicals when the container popped in her face. I guess it just does not work to take a day off from work. NOTICE TO ALL NEIGHBORS, please wrap yourself in bubble wrap, wear an oxygen mask, and do not use sharp objects tomorrow. Becky really wants a day off.

Well I must be off, I am taking a genetics class this semester and I need to get some reading in before I hit the pillows tonight. Wish me luck and I will be wishing you luck too.

Moving Forward

Throughout life we are always pressed with challenges. Challenges such as cancer, moving to a new city, getting your career going, the emotions of life, and changing your comfortability. All of these are bumps in our life that happen and slow our progress to move forward in life. A few weeks ago at church we listened to a sermon based on the topic of sticking with it. It pointed out how people change their situation rapidly as a first means of making things better. A theory of, "that in today's society we find it is easier to just give up and go elsewhere instead of sticking to it". Reflecting on this message I came to realize that the ease of giving up is not the main problem. It's the journey.

When going down the path of life challenges hit us creating the choices of giving up and going to the right or pressing forward and going straight. Over the last few weeks I have seen several people close to me (and even myself) going through at least one of the challenges above. I have seen a good close friend feel relieved to be heading closer to home with a great job offer, while still having the fright of moving to a new city. Instead of saying I will just stay where I am, she is embracing this necessary change to move forward with her career and life. I saw another friend dealing with the fright of being diagnosed with cancer at an early age. Though she had every right to run to the right she continued forward knowing that her worst fears could come true and a permanent life change may exist from her diagnosis. She continued forward and much to her surprise a misdiagnosis looks to have been made and her cancer may not be cancer at all.

As I watch all of these people go through this they could have given up at any moment, but they did not. Life is starting to look better for them now. I myself came to the realization that for my career it was time to get out of my comfortable role at work and take on a new role. I could have kept with my current role, but the lack of the challenge was there and I felt that I could do more. Never wanting to be the person that just coasts by I applied for the Director's position of our Kitchen and Bath Renovations and HDTV programs. This would require more traveling and having to stay on top of several million dollar programs that rehabs and installs new Kitchens and Baths in apartments in our portfolio at UDR. I will also oversee the ordering, purchasing, inventory, delivery, and installation of HDTV's on our property as an incentive for leasing with us. Like I said this is the road of moving forward instead of turning to the right.

Life challenges us at all times. Just remember a change can be necessary if you are needing to move forward, don't think of this change as not sticking to it. Keep moving forward

On a side note girls weekend will be October 2-5 in Cancun. Becky is needing at least one more roommate. It is an all-inclusive resort getaway (including air, hotel, transfers, food, drinks, and activities). If you are able to go let Becky know as it will be a great time for the girls to get away to the beach, enjoy some ocean activities, and comeback rejuvenated to their spouses/boyfriends (that maybe some wishful thinking).

On the Hockey front, this season has shaped up to be quite challenging physically and mentally. It is with much regret that last night I announced when this season ends in September, I will be taking the next season off away from the ice. I may come in and sub for a game or two, but I need to take a break and let some minor aches and pains heal. Though nothing major injury wise has occurred, I have come to be cautious when some pains don't seam to go away in between games. So if you have been thinking about coming to a game, now is the time.

Finally I wanted to announce the next big family and friend vacation maybe coming in May. Presently we are looking at a Baltic cruise. Again if you are interested in going let Becky or I know as we will try to negotiate another great fare or group rate if we get enough people.

I hope everyone is continuing to to do well and I look forward to hearing from you.

The Triple Dip

Usually when you hear of a triple dip visions of 3 scoops of ice cream sitting on a waffle cone come to mind. For me if its got 3 scoops of ice cream throw it in a bowl add some hot fudge, peanut butter sauce, whip cream, a cherry, and some Reese's Pieces. Then you have just made a Reese's Pieces Sundae from Friendly's (an ice cream and diner chain that is predominant on the east coast). So I guess it is safe to say that when I go to excess for my triple dip then I go all the way.

Such was the same case on Saturday night. After attending one of my Hockey Brother's wedding I was invited to come out and play a game for the Silver Wings (aka "The Mini's" as all players on the team own or some how is connected with the Mini Cooper automobile). They were going to be shorthand for the first game of the new season. Knowing that I was already scheduled to play back-to-back for the Grave Diggers and The Komets, I felt it was the perfect time to go to excess.

After having a long and mentally challenging week, it was time to test our my physical well being. During a typical week I spend 3-4 days working out in the weight room (or some other sort of exercise) all in preparation for playing hockey on Saturday nights. Not only has this benefited me in many ways (over the last year it has lowered my resting heart rate to the low 50's, my blood pressure has dropped, and my cholesterol level has been staying below 161) it has allowed me a way to bond with fellow like minded individuals.

Saturday night was a long hard fight with my first two games being a loss and The Komets game being the only win. However when it was all said and done I was tired but refreshed at the same time. Not only did I get to play with some Super Stars of our league (Supergirl, Sergio, Bobby, Bruce, and No Brakes), I also was able to help introduce some friends to the game of hockey. I was so happy that my other non-hockey friends were able to come out, watch a game, and join in the post game camaraderie with the players. The night was filled with some sadness as we said goodbye to our team Captain of The Komets. After multiple seasons, through thick and thin Bruce is leaving the team to move closer to his family in San Diego. For those that do not know Bruce he was the eldest member of our team, a Gentleman who led by example. He has been a mentor of mine on how to keep my composure and lead the team in many instances. I hope that someday I am able to co-Captain a team and lead by the example that he set.

To top things off I was able to sit down with some of my very closest friends and have those one on one endearing conversations where no judgements are past but a greater bond is brought between us. My favorite quote of the night was "to see the way you guys care for each and respect each other shows a bond that does not always exist in other cultures". If you get the chance come out and watch one of the games. You too might enjoy the camaraderie.

Happy Birthday!!

Still looking quite dapper . . .

Well another birthday has come upon us. Today is my Dad's birthday. Don't ask me how old he is because I quit counting. After 60 the only thing that matters is whether your getting social security or not (your McDonald's discounts have already come in by then). Every year I remark at how little my Dad has shown his age, for a period of time it seemed like he was aging fast. Now he has stalled and it is my Mom who is making up for it (sorry Mom).

Mom and Dad were able to stop by and spend the night this week so we could dine on an elegant meal at Ruby Tuesdays. Followed by the celebratory birthday cake (yummy pure sugar). It was great to spend time with them. Of course our birthday celebration was not complete until we shared cake with Coco, Pepper, (their dogs) and Haven (our dog/cat greyhound).

Happy Birthday Dad. I hope you got all of the gifts you wanted and none of the ones you didn't want.

On other fronts Becky is pulling her hair out in Algebra and I am getting less sleep by helping her. Don't worry sleep is so overrated. A good friend of mine once said "don't worry about sleep you'll get all you want once you die." Morbid but true thought. I will admit I think Becky is getting the hang of this second semester of Algebra so my sleep pattern should be returning soon.

Hockey season will be starting up soon. I will post a schedule as soon as I get it. Becky's family reunion is coming up August 9th, if you want to go let Becky or I know and we will make plans to go in one vehicle. This year it will be at Lake Palestine and we will spend Friday night at my parents house, so we can hit the lake early on Saturday.

What a Party

Thanks to everyone who was able to attend Becky's birthday party. She had a wonderful time. She also enjoyed her surprise when I told her that we were leaving after the party to spend the night gambling in Shreveport. Unfortunately Becky did not win, but she did enjoy a good solid hour of playing her favorite game, blackjack.

For those who were unable to make it here are some pictures.

I hope everyone had a safe and wonderful fourth! We enjoyed dinner and the local fireworks show with a good friend. By the way Becky was able to complete the first half of her college algebra course with an A (and here Becky was so concerned with this course that I took the summer off from school). She just started the second part of the course, I will keep you posted on how she does.

Congratulations!!

This past week I was able to attend a wonderful event. It was the ordination ceremony for Erin, our chaplain (and now friend) when Johnathon was in the hospital. Erin also performed the blessing ceremony for Johnathon and our families during his final hours with us. Erin has been so helpful in being a strong sympathetic ear for us to vent to. While at the same time being a great friend to hang out and party with. It was so exciting to see Erin ordained and to know the commitment she has made to God with her life.

A wonderful professor of mine at Dallas Baptist University, Dr. Fred White once said "the greatest call you will ever receive is the call from God, just don't forget to answer the phone". I will say that Erin picked up that call and has done so much with so many families in such a short period of time at Children's Medical Center and in various other places she has traveled through. Congratulations Erin, just remember the journey has only begun, stay strong as you are the backbone of so many people who are in need of God's care.

Hey do you know what this means 8x+2-x= 16? Well Becky does now. I sat down to help her the other night and before I knew it she had scored higher than me on her algebra quiz. I think she just keeps asking for my help so that I will feel needed. Well soon she will have a new problem to tackle as her break from boot camp ends this week. That's right, starting next week it's time for 'ol Sargent Jay Johnson to whip her back into shape. What was his nickname again . . ."Terror". Oh I so will love the smell of ben gay at night!

Hockey is going good. Too good. The Grave Diggers goalie had a scheduling conflict and could not make our game. So we played without a goalie (extra ice time for me). It was a great game, we went 1 1/2 periods before finally giving up a goal. Then the flood gates opened and we lost 4-0. The Komets played immediately afterwards (no rest for the weary) and we won 3-2. By the time it was all over, I was done for. I spent the rest of the night fighting off leg cramps. Great workout, too bad I was so sore I could not mow the yard the next day. I am in Denver this week at a conference for my company. When I get back home I have a jungle waiting for me to take care of. I hope everyone is doing well. I hope it has not gotten too hot where you are at, as summer seams to now be bearing down on us.

Where does it go?

The other night I had a Socrates moment while working out. No it did not happen because a weight hit me in the head, it was before that! Have you ever noticed how many of societies things we take for granted. For example how about the toilet. If it was not for my brothers adventure overseas and all of the pictures he brought back of his bride to be (whom I am starting to believe is a cardboard cut out only because I know he does not know how to use photo shop and all I ever see of her is pictures), this has given me such a different point of view on toilets. If you get a chance, Google images of "Chinese toilet" and you will see what I mean. (By the way that is not a bathtub.) You see with a toilet on the floor it would be quite easy for it to overflow and cause quite a mess.

Now let's Americanize this to the standard porcelain king. Whenever someone here causes it to overflow no one will take ownership of it. Generally they leave the mess for the next person to clean up (sorry Becky it wasn't me it was Haven). Knowing this we now know why a toilet that is floating above our heads in a space station broke down with the last person using it not coming forward. So for an easy fix we send a billion dollar spacecraft up with a new million dollar toilet. Glad I'm not paying for that bill . . . oh right I am, stupid taxes. Out of this whole equation we have taken for granted the plunger. Yes a simple rubber tool that does it all. Fixing toilets and causing raw sewage to back-up into the neighbors apartment downstairs (sorry Dad I still chuckle on that one every time, especially the part when he knocked on our door). So an easy modern day convenience is taken for granted at times along with a funny looking rubber object on a stick (plumbers have the best sense of humor).

Next time you look around at all of our modern day conveniences remember how lucky we are to have these, cause trust me if you think its hard to find out who backed up the toilet, try finding someone to dig a hole and move the outhouse. I guess this all proves one major point, I need to find something better to think about while working out.

On a fun note a cute blonde has been spotted behind the wheel of a slate gray Nissan Altima. Yes that is Becky and yes that is her new car. If you see her, can you do me a favor . . . ask her if I can have a chance to drive it.

I am back at hockey after having 3 weeks off, it was great to be back on the ice. The Komets won but the Grave Diggers lost. After it was all said and done I was happy to be back hanging out with the gang.

Becky is back in school and I am taking the summer off to get projects around the house done. If you come by and see my spotted law, it is because I am tired of the weeds. Don't worry I plan to have the greenest yard on the block by the end of the month. Well must be off, I hope everyone is doing good.

Back from Alaska. . .

Wow, what an experience. The cold. The rain. The eagles. My bum freezing after diving into a pool by a glacier!
Becky and I had a blast on our cruise. I will spare you the stories of eating since I don't want to make you hungry. I will mention though you can knock duck liver off our list of things to eat. I'm not sure what you have heard but in our first stop in Juneau, Becky decided to see a different part of society. As you can see from the picture below it was a fun time.

Don't be fooled the local police are great. The former police chief in the photo was quite a wonderful guy and was willing to show Becky the other side of Juneau. After this stop of shopping and seeing 200 ft of snow we headed off to Hubbard Glacier. It was freezing cold, but well worth the 2 1/2 hours I stood at the front of the boat to see the glacier first.

Then we went to Sitka. This would be our new home away from home if we wanted to get away from the heat of the summer. The eagles soaring overhead as we walked the trails made for a very peaceful getting back in touch with nature experience. If you go there visit the Alaska Raptor Center (http://www.alaskaraptor.org/). One of the eagles we got to see was named Sitka. She is quite beautiful, though the look in her eyes will put the fear in you.

We then went to Ketchikan where some of the best shopping was found. We followed this with our second favorite stop in Victoria, BC Canada. The presence of all of the flowers in town could be smelt all over. I know Becky has already said she is ready to move here or to Sitka. Only problem is I don't eat fish so that rules out living in Sitka and I am not affluent in saying eh, so that puts out Victoria at this time.

I hope everyone is doing fine and enjoys a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!

Keeping the Streak Alive!!!!

Sorry for the delay. Bad Blogger, bad bad Blogger. Bring in the nun with the ruler and let her slap me on the back of the hand. Fortunately I have never had that experience, however I cannot speak for all of my relatives. Well I have been overly busy studying for my final exams, watching the Stars win in the playoffs, working, being the Home Owners Association President, and playing hockey. After all of this I am proud to say I have kept my streak alive of getting A's on my studies. I just finished both my psychology and microbiology courses with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Now my next endeavor is to CRUISE!! That's right it's cruise time. Becky and I are packing to sail away with my Parents and her Grandparents on a fun filled Alaskan vacation. (Please no more requests to bring home magnets. They have weight limits with fines on the airplanes now.)

Here is a recap of what has happened since I have last blogged.

*We all cried and rejoiced at the naming of "Johnathon's Place" for the nursery at Calvary Baptist Church. A wonderful plaque was presented to us with a picture of Johnathon on it that will soon be hung in the church hallway. This meant so much to Becky and I. It has brought an inner peace to me and makes me feel good to know that his memory will be something I can see every Sunday when I share moments with my church family.

*Becky finished her class ahead of me and attempted to rub it in by kicking her heals up and watching TV. (No fair!)

*The Dallas Stars keep winning in the playoffs and I keep watching the games at home (because of exams the night of the games or having to study the night before). I will not be able to attend the next round because of my vacation. I have been forced to sell my tickets to my friends. (NO fair!! Except for my friends.)

*The Grave Diggers hockey team won their first game of the new season. (Way fair!)

*The Komet's hockey team suffers a melt down that will bring the team back together as a contender again. (I look forward to playing with them after my vacation.)

I hope everyone is doing good and I look forward to sharing pictures with you of whales, eagles, and icebergs. (And that's just from the buffet of the ship!)

Open Invitation

This Sunday April 27th we will be celebrating the naming of the nursery at our church (Calvary Baptist Church) in honor of Johnathon. This is our open invitation to you to come and be present for this momentous event. It will be taking place during the 11:00am service. We would love for all of our friends and family members to be present.

Becky will be having a Hockey celebration party Saturday night at the Dr Pepper Star Center in Euless at 9:00pm. I have a game at 9:15pm that I will be playing with the Grave Diggers. Come by and join the festivities and enjoy a good game.

Happy Birthday Supergirl!

I thought I would take this opportunity to welcome a new member to the 30 club. The first teammate I met when I started playing hockey was Mel aka "Supergirl". When I heard that she was approaching her 30th I knew it was time to have some fun. Don't let the picture fool you, Supergirl may look small but she fights like a spider monkey. I once saw her take a guy down to the floor, of course Becky was hanging onto his other leg. I knew they had him in pain as tears started to form in his eyes (of course that may have been because no one had a web cam handy to video him being attacked by two hot girls, sorry Bryan).

Supergirl has always been a great team leader on and off the ice. This summer she is getting all of the girls together to go to the beach. That's a party that I am sure will have some great stories. (Pictures of MTV Spring Break dances in my head as I think of what that party will be like). Mel has done and accomplished so much in her first 30 years. Mel I raise my glass and salute you, I think the next 30 are going to be your best ever. Don't forget a certain someone who sounds like ecky but starts with a B will be joining you in the club very soon.

Happy Birthday!

Love Ya,
Chilly and Becky

(Note to self keep web cam handy whenever you are hanging out with Becky and Supergirl.)

Blood, Sweat, and Tears . . .

Above are the before pictures. Below are the after pictures. After 20 hours of work we transformed 330 square feet into a bright and wholesome environment that a child could grow up in. I could say so much about what we did, but I am choosing to let the pictures speak for the love that we put into it. Special thanks to my parents, Becky's parents, Jennifer & Scott, Rebecca & Dustin, and to all of the members of Calvary Baptist Church who stopped by or sent us nourishment. Special thanks to the kids of Oakridge Estates for being the hands of love that wrap the room. Special thanks to Allison (the first toddler to try the room out), your smile gave me the seal approval that we achieved what we came to do. Finally special thanks for those who called, commented here, or sent us messages of support.

Calling All Hands

Are you able bodied? Do you know what a hammer is? Do you know how to work a tape measure? If this is you then I have a project for you. If this is not you, I still have a project for you. Becky and I will be remodeling the nursery at the church this weekend. We are doing this in honor of Johnathon as he would have spent time here on Sundays if he had the chance. We know that he would like a nice room to hang out in with his friends, and so we are going to nursery the nursery. Yes I will take before and after pictures for everyone to see, but I would really like if you have some free time a hand in getting this project done. I have set a lofty goal of getting it done in a short period of time. Nothing that will be done has not already been easily done on one of those TLC shows where they remake a room on the weekend.

I will start with some minor things on Thurs and move to more major stuff on Friday. However the most important (time consuming) items will be done on Saturday. This is when I will need help. This will also be the day of finishing touches. If you have any eye for decorativeness this will definitely be your cup of tea. If you can come help (even if its just for 30 minutes), please contact Becky or I this week and let us know. I think everyone will appreciate what the nursery will look like when we get done.

On the hockey side the playoffs finished up last week with the Komets losing a close one at 3 - 2. I unfortunately did not play for the Grave Diggers do to a previous commitment, but they did get their second win of the season at 3 - 2. Way to go guys! Next season I will try to reduce my number of games on the Grave Diggers in half. I started to notice a lot of creaks and cracks in my system from all of the wear and tear, so I am going to shorten my schedule to prevent any major injuries (plus vacation time will cut in on some of my playing time as well).

We had a hockey party on Friday night. What a party it was, it took me all weekend to recover. It went something like this . . . Meet at Scott's house for pre-game warm-up, meet Mike at my house for pre-game drive. Go to the arena and meet with some "Ice Girls" for autographs (for someone with a cold name they are hot http://stars.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=NHLPage&id=8481). Party with Patty and the kids. Dustin and Rebecca showed up and now the party is getting started. Aunt Mozel arrived with Dorothy and Spud. This was followed by Warren, Laura, WC, and Mary Bob showing up. Now the party was in full strength. Midway through the Stars are tied. Where is Brenda and Monty? What? How? Well we found Brenda and Monty sitting in the Platinum Club section. Time to disown them for getting the free upgrade! Now the party has really kicked the highest gear as Emily and her friend arrived. By the way its $1 hot dog night!! Oh no the Stars lose. Well so much for the game, time for the after party. Me, Becky, Mike, Scott, Emily and her friend all end up at Dick's Last Resort. By this time I realized it was our last resort, just as that wadded up piece of paper hits me in the head and the paper fight was on. Several paper throws later and we are out of there. What a night, but it does not end as Becky has a flat tire and I must change it. Finally in bed, but unable to sleep. I can't wait for Mike's pictures from the party. It's safe to say this party had all of the elements of being . . . wait for it . . . LEGENDARY! Yes I will be post the pictures!

On March 29th my parents came up and we drove over to the cemetery to see Johnathon's new memorial marker. It came out great. We then drove over to visit where Christine was resting. I had not been their in over 8 years. (For those not familiar Christine is my sister who passed away after birth due to complications of being premature). I though I might share pictures of Johnathon's marker along with his Aunt's as I am sure they are playing together right now.

It's Trauma Time

Well Becky is off to trauma camp to help her former patients have a good time. It's a great little weekend getaway the hospital puts on for its long term trauma patients. Becky goes as a camp counselor. She was real excited and looking forward to it.

That leaves me alone so I can get some uninterrupted studying in. I will take one big break to spend some time with my parents, as the memorial marker has arrived and been installed (picture to follow as soon as I can get out there), my parents and I will be going to see it tomorrow. I am looking forward to seeing my parents again so soon.

The playoffs have started for my hockey teams, the Komets finished in the middle of the pack, so the best we can finish is in 5th place. As for the Grave Diggers we had a perfect record of zero wins (not the perfect you had in mind). The Komets game is at 8pm on Saturday and the Grave
Diggers are at 10:15pm.

A fond farewell to Nick and Julie. They have helped out in so many ways that there is never enough ways to ever thank them. I wish we could have spent more time with them prior to their move, but I now know someone else we need to visit when we go to New York. I hope your move goes well and keep in touch.

Need a Prayer

Well the past couple of weeks have not been too wonderful. After the passing of Becky's co-workers son in Iraq we found out this week that one of my teammates father in-law passed away. Please pray for Ryan and Lana as they grieve the loss of Lana's Dad. A great colleague of mine once told me that you never realize how big the world is until once a parent passes away. If there is anything we can do to make that world not so much bigger we are here for you guys.

A prayer for my friend Mike who has gone through some tough times lately. Mike, I can already tell that you are emerging from this a stronger and better man. I'm here for you every step of the way.

A prayer for David. After his layoff he has landed back on his feet with a new job. Unfortunately it is quite a drive to his new work. I can tell that his family is quite proud that he makes such a sacrifice for them every day. Brother I am here any time you need help. Keep strong.

A prayer for Carly. As tough as she is, life has hit her hard lately. Becky and I still treat you like a sister and we are always there to offer a kind ear and support. Everything will work out in the end as their is always a master plan, whether we understand it or not.

Everyone listed here sent so many prayers for Becky, Johnathon, and I that it is with honor that we offer you our prayers, support, and time. Please do not hesitate to call on us. We love you all and we wish for better times.

In Memory of Dustin

I learned today that the son of Ina (a close co-worker of mine) was killed in Iraq. He was 21 years old serving in the Army as a soldier when he died serving our country.

My heart goes out to you Ina for your loss. I know this is the hardest thing you will ever have to go through. The loss of a child is hard to bear and I do not understand why it has to happen. Hearing of this has opened fresh wounds of hurt. I wish this upon no one to lose their only son. I know God works in many different ways and I know we do not know his plan for us. The grief for you goes deeper then I can explain. People ask me how I am doing and how I handle what has happened. This is what I will tell you. Each day is hard to wake up in the morning not seeing your son’s face and not being able to hold him in your arms. Each week you feel like it is all a dream and that you will wake up and it all never happened. Each month his memory grows stronger in your heart to where you know no matter what happens he is always with you where ever you go. Our boys are together in a better place and I know one day we will see them again.

Johnathon, mommy does miss you very much and you have shown me how to be a better person and nurse. You have given me a gift of compassion towards the families I care for and the understanding of how I need to live my life. You are the best thing that has ever happened to me and you will never be replaced in my heart. You are my Angle that goes with me on my day by day adventures of life and I know I will hold you again in my arms. Thank you for making me a better person and showing me how true unconditional love feels.

Stephen thank you for all that you have done for me over the past few months. I know I have been a bit not myself. I thank God every day for you and the love you show me. You are the best thing to come into my life and help open my eyes to the world. I love you for that.

Please everyone let’s keep my friend Ina in your prayers as she goes through this hard time. I will keep everyone posted on how she is doing. Please pray for Luke as he is due home from Iraq next month and for all of the other men and women serving over there to keep them safe.

Thank you to everyone who reads this blog, you all are the best support during this time and Stephen and myself love hearing from you all.

-Living life day by day, with my eyes open, no longer closed. Love, Becky

Snow Was Fun!!

Well our crazy weather hit a new high (or low). We followed a day of 70 degree weather with snow. Then for kicks we did it one more time this week. So twice in one week we had snow. The big headlines made for some welcome relief of a winter that was lacking snow.
Of course Becky loves a snow day that occurs right before she goes back to work, as it becomes a free stay at the Hilton Anatole. Something about 600 thread count sheets on a special bed that they will sell you at the end of your stay makes going to work the next day a little more enjoyable. Ahh the perks of working for a hospital that wants to make sure its nurses are there the next day. They even drive her to work and give her free breakfast. Don't worry I was safe and warm with my hockey dog.
By the way the Komets and Grave Diggers both lost with valiant efforts. The Komets played an undefeated team and took them to a shoot out before losing. Then the Grave Diggers played their best game of the year before losing 2-1 (I had 4 shots on goal and was involved on 2 other strong scoring opportunities). Next week will be a real showdown as the Komets will be playing against the Grave Diggers. It was easy for me to pick sides since I bleed Komet orange (sorry Grave Diggers you will need to find a replacement for me). See you at the game.

What a Week!

Well my week started off wrong. I awoke Sunday morning sore and tired after the loss of both my hockey teams (except my Dallas Stars what a win streak they are on). Both games turned into real sore experiences. In the first game I had someone step on my skate and I twisted my ankle. I was skeptical about playing in the second game, but when it loosened up in warm-ups I took that as a good sign. Unfortunately I should have quit while I was ahead. In the second game I got clobbered. One of the most important rules of hockey is keep your knees bent and don't stand straight up. In doing so you make yourself an open target, as you are unable to protect yourself or move quick enough to get out of the way. I failed that lesson. After being helped off of the ice from my collision with another player I was told to take the rest of the night off. Which was good as I now had a terrible headache and I wanted to go rest somewhere while I got my faculties back? My body told me how bad the night before was when I awoke Sunday. So I vegetated most of the day.

My week continued with a headache that finally broke on Wed. On Wed. I also discovered double red cell donation at the blood bank. I had received a call from the blood bank saying they needed more donations of my blood type. I decided it was a good time to give as I was not going to be working out any this week so I would not have any conflicts in scheduling or down time to worry about (you must take it easy for 24 hours after any blood donation). When I was done qualifying they said I qualified to be a double red donor. This is a process that takes 20 minutes. During the process they only keep the red blood cells and send plasma, IV fluids, everything else back to you. Since they can take twice as much it works better for the blood supply without harming you. I also found that this same procedure is banned by cyclist organizations as it can help with improved performances in races (I figure I would forego the Tour De France this year anyways). I actually felt better after giving this blood than I did when I walked in the door. If you get a chance to give blood I would highly recommend the double red, however there are many other ways to donate(http://www.carterbloodcare.org/typesofdonations.aspx).

My week came to a close on Friday with a trip to Houston to train some of my colleagues on some of their new duties. I was greeted at the rental car center with a brand new Chrysler Sebring convertible (I even asked the attendant if they gave me the wrong car). It was a free upgrade that was quite enjoyable as it was 70 degrees in Houston when I arrived. Of course I drove with the top down, even though I did get hit with rain showers twice (luckily it was very light and very short rain). No matter what it was a refreshing end to a long week.

As for Becky she was back at boot camp this week. She is doing so good she out did her record time on the 2 mile run by 7 minutes and increased her pushups by 9. However she was able to do one thing this week that I still cannot figure out how she did it. When driving home the other night she ran over a key. Someone’s house key. I would think that a flat object like a key, which can be easily broken off in a door lock, would not have the capacity to puncture a tire. I can attest (along with the guys at Firestone) that it happened. The funniest part of all was the key was still sticking out from the tire when I changed it. So if you drive somewhere watch out for keys in the road they really bite.

Becky's grandparents will be joining us on our cruise to Alaska. It turns out Mary Bob's father always wanted to go to Alaska before he passed away. His desire to see Alaska now lives on in Mary Bob and so she snapped at the chance to go on this trip with us. We are looking forward to our cruising adventure with them. Only 2 1/2 months away. I am already getting excited.

Well I'm off to study for another test, until next week go Stars!

B'day

Here it is my top ten questions I've had on my birthday.

10. Do you feel older? Do not ask this question of anyone who plays hockey as your body always says one thing and your mind another.

9. Do feel smarter? I just took an exam on microbiology, of course I feel smarter. Do you know what a prokaryote is?

8. Any new grey hairs? Trust me they were there yesterday and they like to bring friends.

7. Did they sing Happy Birthday to you? Whoever "they" are will be avoided like the plague. I do not wish to lose my hearing on my birthday.

6. Did you get your letter from social security? Ha ha ha, no they sent me a bill instead with a note saying please give more.

5. Were you surprised? After 32 years I think I have figured out that something will happen on 2/20. Call it an intuition.

4. What are you doing next year for your birthday? I am starting to loose my mind, who are you and what did you do with my pills.

3. What did you get for your birthday? A crazy monkey card singing happy birthday, oh yeah and a bagel (bagel good mmmmm).

Test & Papers

Sorry I have taken so long to post. Becky and I have been inundated with school work. She had a 15 page paper due and I had my first lab exam for Microbiology. As usual competition between Becky and I hit a high mark. I made a 97 on my exam and she bested me with a 98. I will allow for her to gloat on that one for awhile. I have Microbiology lecture exam next week on February 20th. I know it really ruins your birthday by having a test on it.

Due to my exam we are working on trying to do my birthday party at the Stars game on the 22nd. Let Becky or I know if you are interested in going. I think we have roughly 7 - 10 people going so far. Becky is going to call our Season Ticket rep and se what kind of special deals they can get us. Last time we were able to get some great tickets and spend some time with the Ice Girls (I wish I could remember their names, but I was too busy staring at their outfits).

Now Attention! Drop and give me 20! That's right Becky is back to boot camp next week. The 2 weeks of rest, relaxation, and no kickboxing are over. Becky's class starts back on the 18th and she can’t wait. Let her know if you want to join her. She can take you for free on Saturdays. Congratulations to Becky’s co-worker for being brave and signing up for the class. I will say that I expected a lot of yelling, but I was impressed as it was more encouragement as we ran, squatted, jumped, and push-uped our way through the workout. It was fun and left us all with some funny stories to tell (still not quite sure how we did crawling down the stairs without hurting ourselves). So if you want to join Becky for the whole session you still can sign-up online at http://www.jaysbootcamp.com.

On the hockey front . . . this weekend should be our last late night game (yeah). I know several people have said to me that they can’t wait for the early games to begin, so that they can attend. I can’t wait either. Last weekends game was a real grinder. I had 3 shots on goal but did not score. We ended up going to a shoot out and I think we went 9 players deep into it before a final score was made (not in our favor).

On the cruise front I have finally gotten it all booked. We will be leaving out of Seattle on the Oosterdam (that’s right one of those Holland America “dam ships”). http://www.hollandamerica.com/find-cruise-vacation/CruiseDetails.action?noOfFlexibleMonths=1&shipCodeSearch=OS&flexibleMonths=false&pageNumber=1&voyageCode=O833. If you get a chance you can checkout our itinerary and the ship. It looks to be fun, as my parents have already booked as well. If your interested in going let us know as the ship is booking quick. We do have a contact who is getting us a pretty good deal and probably could get you something too.

Big congratulations and welcome to the Children’s Hospital family to Kendra. She has been hired on and will be working up on the 12th floor where Johnathon was at. I’m glad to hear this as I think Children’s has added a real good nurse in Kendra. She should be starting her orientation soon. I know she will miss the dull brown walls of Parkland, but I think a little crayola crayon colors in her life may do her some good (I hope her boys can come and see her at work and check out the cool trains).

On a final note we did receive some bad and good news on our dog Haven. Over the past couple of weeks she has been starting to act forgetful and lost in her thoughts sometimes. We took her into the vet and they discovered that she has a heart murmur which could be causing a lack of blood flow to her brain. Not much can be done with dogs in this situation. The good news is all of her blood test came back normal. Her thyroid was low, but she is taking her thyroid medicine twice a day now. Since being on the medicine for 6 days so far she has regained some of her pep and vigor, but she still gets confused at times. The Doctors believe that a ligament in her heart valve may have failed (could be damage from her racing days that just now gave away). We have to make weekly checks on her pulses and listen to her heart beat to make sure it is not getting worse. As for now Haven is doing fine and is more than happy to greet you at our front door. Just don’t let her fool you in trying to give her an extra dog cookie (she is getting real good at that).

Goal!!

With only seconds left in the 1st period of the Komets vs. Puckers game a slapshot was made from the point that hit the goalies outstretched arm. The puck fluttered smoothly to the ice taking a slow glide toward the right hand post. With one second left a stick sweeps in from a wrist shot popping the puck up and over the laid out goalie, hitting the back of the net as the buzzer rang. A quick look at the official who did not waive it off led to moments of exhuberance and excitement. The loud screams of joy followed by the jumping into the approaching teamates arms signified the passion in which we all play with as I scored my first goal.

Though we ended up losing the game it was monumental for me. Unfortuanely Becky was unable to attend since it was such a late game (she had to go to work early the next morning). However Pastor Eddie was on hand and greeted me with great congratulations. Thanks to all of my teammates who have made so many memories in my life so special. Your hearts and passion are felt every time we get together. I look forward to suiting up with you again on the ice of battle. Remember the season is young and I hope this is a sign of things to come as I improve on becoming a scoring player. Here is the link to the website showing the official record for the game with me being credited with the goal. http://www.pointstreak.com/players/gamesheet_full.html?gameid=650667

The Heineken

It's time to bring your Heine to Grapevine for the Heineken cup game. That's right Euless vs. Grapevine is this Friday night at 9:00 pm at the rink in Grapevine Mills. It should be a good game as Becky and I have been trying to recruit a ringer for the game. Yes we are trying to bring in a Canadian. We figure that would put the edge on our side. Our regular goalie will not be able to attend, but we have a special goalie who goes by the nickname "Helicopter". He is fun to watch and great to laugh with after the game.

To make it more fun I have 2 games Saturday back in Euless. I am back helping out with the Grave Diggers. They play at 9:00 pm followed by the Komets at 10:30 pm. I do not remember who we are playing in either game but it should be fun.

Now for a special treat, if you have not had the chance to attend Becky's bootcamp, this is your last weekend to do so. They will be meeting at 8:00am in Grapevine on Saturday. Jay Johnson and his wife Lin will both be instructing this last class for the month. Becky already has 2 co-workers and our next door neighbor saying they will attend (remember it is free, great time to try it out without having to pay). From what I am hearing from Becky, it sounds like she will be signing on for another session next month.

On the school side of things, Becky is having to do a community service project. The organization she has chosen to work with is the Mothers Milk Bank of North Texas (http://www.mmbnt.org/). This is a wonderful organization that provides breast milk to babies that need the supplement in the hospital. Becky had heard of this organization, and after Johnathon passed she donated all her frozen milk to them. She had to work there one day last week. Since then she has come to appreciate this organization even more. For her project she has to write a grant and try to get funding for the organization. She has taken real ownership of this project as she has already start doing all of the written work and is trying to identify potential organizations to seek funding from. Her main goal is to find the $36,000 that is necessary for the Milk Bank to purchase a pasteurizing machine. This new machine would allow for them to process more milk and get it out in larger quantities to the hospitals that request it. We have a couple of friends who may have companies that maybe interested, but I do ask that if you know of a good contact at a company that may want to sponsor such a project please let Becky know.

I had an interesting moment at the cemetary the other day. Becky and I went after church to visit Johnathon and leave some flowers. While walking up we always stop and pay our respects to any new graves that we may pass. On this day when we approached Johnathon's resting place we noticed fresh flowers from a sevcie around a new grave site that was about 8 feet away from Johnathon's. I stopped to read the name, in doing so it dawned on me that the name was too familiar. As I stood their examing the flowers a card stood out with the Texas A&M markings and the Dallas Stars emblem on it. I instantly realized that this was for Matt McKee, he was the Dallas Stars Director of Ticket Operations. Though I had never talked directly with Matt, we had seen him at some functions and he did help me get the price for my season tickets corrected once before. We had learned of his passing just the previous weekend from one of our hockey friends who works for the Stars. Matt was only 32 when he passed away. Here is the artcle about him on the Stars website http://stars.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=NewsPage&articleid=350473.

Before Johnathon had passed we had been informed that the Dallas Stars were to be at the hospital the following Tuesday. We knew this would be a great chance to get some pictures with the players and to share a moment of joy with them. We even requested selected players that would make it more memorable. Seeing that a member of the Stars family is now resting close to Johnathon made me renew my commitment to getting the book completed of this blog. I would like to furnish a copy of it to the Stars team for them to see what has occurred from them that has brought us some memoriable moments.

Hockey has become a real past time around our house and has provided a new family. If you have had a long week and need to get away this weekend, I invite you to come join my other family and see for yourself what all of the fun is about.

It's Hockey Time!

The new season kicks off on Saturday. Since our team is on Pointstreak you can actually now check out our record and see my stats. http://www.pointstreak.com/players/players-team.html?teamid=103934. No exact date on when Becky will take the ice for her first game action, but I will say her boot camp is definitely getting her into shape. About a week before she started boot camp she bought a new pair of scrub pants to better fit her with the remaining baby weight. After going to boot camp for 2 weeks, when she put the pants on to wear them to work they turned into MC Hammer pants (GO Becky its Hammer time). From what I am hearing it sounds like she is having such a good time that she wants to sign up for another month. I guess you could say she is "Too Legit to Quit" (ok no more Hammer references). It is safe to say with Becky returning back to work and school back in session she is returning back to her normal schedule. With her busy days now I guess you could say "U Can't Touch This" (sorry that one slipped, no more Hammer references I promise). With her busy schedule I guess we will have to start playing where's Becky or "Have You Seen Her" (ok so I lied, if you are addicted to Hammer check out this site for all of his albums and songs http://www.google.com/musica?aid=gw3q7osDIGE&sa=X&oi=music&ct=result).

School is going good for me. Lots of reading. I was in Sarasota, FL last week. Temps were in the 60's and it felt good. I was attending an operations conference for my Company. Great to see so many of my co-workers that I do not get to see much of during the year. Next up, it sounds like a trip to Richmond and Denver. If I go to Denver I will see if I can bring my tag along with me. I think Becky would love to see her cousins who live out that way. It has been quite awhile since she has seen them. We will just have to wait and see, as Becky is trying to save up vacation for the Alaskan cruise. To note I have narrowed it down to 3 cruises, 1 on Princess and 2 Holland America. I just received some pricing information from my Dad so I hope to make a decision by this weekend. David and Christina have mentioned that they may want to join us again on the cruise. We love cruising with them. David and I are so similar in our lay back atmosphere on a cruise and leave the real partying to the professionals (our wives). Well must be off I have a psychology book that is calling my name (and no I do not blame my problems on my Mother, that would be my Brother who falls into this Sigmund Freud category).

See you at the game! It starts at 9:15pm. Here is the link to the schedule http://www.pointstreak.com/players/players-team-schedule.html?teamid=103934.

Back to School

"In the school I went to, they asked a kid to prove the law of gravity and he threw the teacher out of the window." -- (Rodney Dangerfield - Back to School, 1986)

Well it's back to school for us. We have already got our books and backpacks together. Becky starts on Wed., but I had the luxury of going at it on Mon. night. It was fun to see what the community college class was like compared to the private universities that I attended in the past. I am glad that I went the private university route as I found a sense of laziness in the air (something that was never present at any of my other schools). I guess this is from students who are taking a course just to get by and not taking it because they have an interest in it.

Update on Becky. She is sore. She has found out that it is possible to be sore on top of your sore spots. However she is having a good time and is making great strides. It is fun to hear her workout stories when she gets home. Saturday I will be joining her for a free workout session (you are welcome to come, it is at 8am at the Fellowship Church in Grapevine off 121). Wish me luck.
On a lighter note . . . .

Taking your wife to the Stars hockey game . . . . . . . . . $75.

Finding your neighbor in your garage wearing your hockey equipment . . . . . . . . SCARY.
Seeing your wife for the first time wearing hockey gear . . . . . . . . . Priceless!
